Step right up Ladies and Gents! Amazing Feats of Culinary Bravery!

While spending a great couple of days with EL and her husband last weekend, El’s husband showed me how to flip eggs using only the pan in which they were cooking. I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to be able to do it – looked WAY too impressive. However, come Sunday morning as I was cooking my eggs, I thought about what he said and viola! – flipped eggs with no breakage of yolks and no spill to the stove. I was amazed and so tickled with myself and thankful for the lesson. It got me thinking about what other culinary feats I might like to tackle. Here are a few items on my culinary feat list that I’m hoping to try now that I have the confidence that comes with successful egg flipping!

  • Tossing pizza crust in the air to stretch it: Seriously – how fun would that be!?!?

  • Making Croissants: Possibly not as much fun as tossing around dough but think how impressive fresh home-made croissants would be!

  • Crème Brule: Not even sure if I like the taste of this fancy sounding dessert, but I want to give it a try. Why else have I been stock piling ramekins for the last 10 years? Plus, you get to light it on fire – how daring a feat is that? Alton Brown’s video really makes this feat seem fierce (click on the pic below to see video).

  • Homemade ice cream: I’m pretty sure most of you have already done this, but I have never, ever – not even once in my life – made home-made ice cream. I’m going to say “No Thanks!” to the flavors El discovered, but I can think of some lovely combinations that would be delicious. How about peach and toasted pecan, cherry bourbon, chocolate almond….Check out Southern Living for these and other intriguing options.

  • Macarons: They look like so much fun. I may have to try red, white, and blue ones for Friday’s Fourth of July celebration. These below look amazing!

I figure I’m at an age where there is no reason not to try something just for fun. I’m also old enough to laugh at myself should the experiment not go so well (ala Lucy). I no longer am crushed by any culinary failures. I was surprised at how good it felt flipping eggs in the pan, such a simple pleasure accompanied by a feeling of accomplishment! I dare each of you to try something new –  culinary or otherwise – and see just how much fun it is. To quote Nike – just do it!!!

And then of course we want to hear all about it! 🙂

  1. El’s husband showed me some of his culinary tricks, too. He’s amazing, isn’t he? I don’t think I’ve successfully turned the eggs, though. I’ll have to work on that one. 😉

    1. I foresee the same thing happening for me – at least at first. However, I also foresaw myself throwing eggs either on the floor or on top of the stove and that didn’t happen! We may surprise ourselves! I’m going to ask for instructions the next time I’m in the pizza parlor and see someone flipping that dough! My husband can be relied on to get a picture if it lands on my head 🙂
